Detailed information about the development of the LMS motion control project.
The ‘Modular Approach’ is not a new  revolutionary design concept, on the contrary, the 3 modules  referred  to in this project are the fundamental elements of all C.N.C machines. In some systems complex interfacings make these modules highly dependent on one another. For this project it was important that each module retained its independence. This approach makes the construction and maintenance of the system  much easier, and offers a huge cost advantage by allowing a wide range of affordable equipment (encoders, motors, and amps) to be mixed and matched.   Each module added must improve the machines capabilities . Fitting  a  D.R.O   helps with  manual operation  of  the machine, and  Installing variable speed power feeds to each  axis  improves the machines productivity.  Both of  the above modifications can be justified on their own merits. They are also  the  2  basic  ‘Modules’ required when converting a machine to  C.N.C. Control.  This project  will refer to them  as the  INPUT  &   OUTPUT  modules  based on the polarity of  their signals with reference to the interface board.  The input module (module 1) sends positional feedback data to the control module (module 3) and the output module (module 2) receives  +/- 10 volt analogue commands to drive the axis power feeds.  (View system schematic )
